Virginia Woolf, outstandingly original as a novelist, and a critic of effect percipience, had great upon her own generation, and she is likely to attract appreciative study so long as the art of fiction engages scholars and pleases the discriminating general reader.
Bernard Blackstone, who is Byron Professor of English Literature at Athens University, has already written a study of Virginia Woolf in book form (1949); in this essay his emphasis is upon her point of view, and he shows most clearly why she was of such importance as an artist. Professor Blackstone’s other published work includes English Blake (1949), and an edition of the papers of Nicholas Ferrar.
